Setting the Stage for Success

This article is about long-term success for schools and districts.


Why do some independent schools and some public school districts enjoy long periods of success—characterized by stability, harmony, and high student achievement— while others always seem to be battling executive turnover, conflict, and low test scores?


The simple answer is that successful schools and districts have competent leaders who “fit” within their school communities and work collaboratively with supportive Boards of Trustees. Over time, ability and teamwork lead to positive results.


As more and more executive jobs become available, it is imperative for school boards to do their homework in order to lay the foundation for a successful search. The problem is that most boards don’t appreciate the importance of the preparation phase. In fact, most boards aren’t equipped to discuss their needs with search firms, to recognize the competencies necessary for the successful administration of a school/district, or to establish the dimensions of candidate fit.


When a board doesn’t know what it’s looking for, it can’t expect search firms to find the perfect candidate. Without the right leader, even the best board in the world won’t be able to make the relationship last, and it’s back to square one.
